liminal spaces

All of a sudden, I bumped into this whole new world of liminal spaces. It was actually thanks to Mark Zuckerberg, but thats's a whole different story :).

Liminal spaces are places that make a transitional situation tangible. That vacuum moment between what was and what will be. The threshold between two places, two realities, two worlds. This can cause discomfort, disorientation or even panic.

Liminal spaces can be physical places as well as a state of mind. When you're in a liminal space, it can be eerie and uncanny; something is not right. At the same time, transformation is possible. You are separate from where you came from and there are no new rules yet.

My quest for liminal spaces continues. Among other things, I am investigating edgelands: those places where city life and rural or industrial life meet. In-betweenness in urban planning. In addition, liminality can also be found in people. For example when you're in that twilight zone between being asleep and being awake. Or when you are transitioning from an adolescent into a grown-up.
